Overview |
|
Transportation has been the major factor in Massillon's
growth. The Ohio-Erie Canal was an early stimulus, followed by
rail service. Massillon is served by three major railroads.
Highway transportation also plays a key
role in Massillon's development. US Route 21 (a four lane limited
access highway) provides excellent access to Cleveland and Akron
in the North, as well as I-77 and I-76. US Route 30 provides
a good four lane east-west artery. These are supplemented by
93, 172 and 241. Early industrial growth was in basic steel and
large machinery.
Today, the local economy has diversified
and includes plastics, automotive products, packaging materials
and consumer food products. The community spirit is best exemplified
by the tremendous support for the Massillon Tigers football team,
a perennial Ohio scholastic football power.
